Social Distancing Remains in Place: Update from Kirt May 15, 2020

May 15, 2020

Dear Equinox Village Residents and Family Members,

We want to do everything we can to prevent residents from acquiring this disease and to keep it from spreading throughout the building. It is for that reason that at this point, we feel it is in the best interest of all residents to not start loosening our guidelines yet. If this disease enters our building, with a resident or staff person becoming ill, we may need instead to add precautions and restrictions, so please bear with us for a few more weeks to be safe.

With restrictions in place, retailers and lodging facilities are the next on the list to open. In addition, a few doctors’ offices have started taking patients and some outpatient services have resumed. This means more people will be moving around. The more you come in contact with other people, the more at risk you are for contracting COVID-19. The disease has not gone away. The re-openings are due to economic reasons, not because the risk of acquiring the disease has decreased. Also, right now our hospitals have a low caseload, so they can care for more sick people. Please make wise choices for your safety and others. We would all appreciate it.

Know that if you choose to hold a bridge game in your apartment with other residents, there are risks. Please take the necessary precautions by asking where residents have been in the last two weeks and who they’ve seen. Also, disinfect everything, don’t touch your face, have hand sanitizer nearby, wear a mask and wash your hands often. The same precautions should be taken by residents that choose to visit with family outside of the building, on your own or the communal patio. Seeing family and being outside are both mood lifters. If you choose to do this, please do it safely.

Masks are required when outside of your apartment. Residents not wearing a mask will be asked to return to their apartment. If you do not have one, please let us know. We have a limited supply of disposable masks. With that said, when you are outside walking by yourself, or with a safe distance between you and a partner, you do not need to wear a mask. It’s healthier and safer to NOT wear a mask when outside walking. The mask is only necessary when social distancing is not possible.

At some point, our Hair Salon will open, as will others in town. For residents that have utilized a hair salon in the outside community, it is suggested that you reconsider that choice. Equinox Village’s hair salon will be utilized by residents only. There will only be one hair dresser and one resident receiving services at a time. No one else will be waiting in the room. We know our hair stylist has recently taken the Barbicide Certification and Vermont Occupational Safety and Health Administration (VOSHA) training in order to operate safely. It is strongly suggested that residents consider receiving salon services, as well as massage and acupuncture here, rather than becoming exposed from the outside world. Telehealth appointments may also be available with your doctor. Consider talking to them via the computer or phone before making an in-person appointment.

Again, resident safety is our top priority. Please be careful and stay well.
